The Monument
The nine men we honor span a century of American history, from the Civil War to Vietnam. They were Black and white; Army, Navy, and Marine Corps; born enslaved and born to privilege. What they shared is what the Medal recognizes: courage above and beyond the call of duty, and love for the one standing next to them.
A few of the nine are remembered around the city with a bridge, a plaque, or a scholarship. No place in Richmond honors them together. We are working toward a memorial in downtown Richmond that gathers their nine stories in one place, where every Richmonder can stand and say: these were ours.
Our charter asks for a space that is steadfast and stirring, that acts as a bridge between communities, and that leaves room for reflection. It is built around the six Medal of Honor values, not around any one recipient or era.

How it happens
A memorial gets built with three things. We are working on all three: meeting with local government, growing our base of supporters, and showing up for Richmond season after season, from scholarships to street cleanups.
You can put your name on this from the start. Our founding-supporter campaign runs through the end of 2026. As a Founding Supporter, your name becomes part of Monumental Honor's story: permanent recognition on a dedicated page of our website and a participating opportunity in our future Monument itself.
